Subject description: PET / SFS file and print server
  Reply with quote

I have had success in getting the full Samba 3.5.5 with all of its services operational in Lucid Puppy 5.1.1
The packages below contain all of Samba functionality making it suitable for almost all Linux and Windows LAN scenarios. Forum member gcmartin has volunteered to produce documentation as well for any newbie, all the way up to LAN administrator to use when sharing printers and files from a Puppy PC with any other Linux, Windows PC, MAC, smart-phone, i-Pad, Xbox, etc.

There are two installation types to choose from, either PET or SFS. The PET is suitable for all types of Puppy installations and the SFS is designed for frugal installs. Each type has unique setup requirements for both Samba and CUPS. This is handled automatically by the PET install whereas the SFS has a separate system configuration script to set up the system.
Before using Samba you must configure the desired type of Samba server via the /etc/opt/samba/smb.conf file. The smb.conf file that comes with Puppy is not complete. A simple smb.conf example is included in both installations and may be found at /opt/samba/share/examples. This example configures Samba as a file and print server for a trusted local network and does not require user names or passwords.

Please read /opt/samba/share/Samba-3.5.5-puppy-readme.txt before using Samba. The file contains important information for configuring and securing your server. It is not a comprehensive document on server security.

INSTALLING

SFS - not recommended for full HD installs.
The SFS is a 38 MB download and requires no additional disk space to use.
Place the SFS in /mnt/home.
Use ‘System -> BootManager configure bootup’ to load the SFS at startup.
Extract sfs-config.sh from sfs-config.tar.gz and run it.
Edit /etc/opt/samba/smb.conf to your requirements.
Configure your firewall as outlined in the readme, as a minimum.
Reboot.

PET
The PET is a 40 MB download and uses 138 MB of disk space installed.
To install the PET, click on it. Be patient, it takes a little time to install.
If you choose to read the /opt/samba/share/Samba-3.5.5-puppy-readme.txt during the installation, the install will not finish until the document is closed.
Edit /etc/opt/samba/smb.conf to your requirements.
Configure your firewall as outlined in the readme, as a minimum.
Reboot.

ADDITIONAL NOTES

Puppy uses a well known default root password. This should be changed to a strong one.
The packages are configured for i686 -without-cifsupcall, for Lucid Puppy 5x.
No users or passwords are created during the installation. You may create them if you wish , of course.
If you need Windows Active Directory support for your server, Kerberos and OpenLDAP must be installed.

If you don't need a full Samba package, Samba-TNG is much much smaller and appears to work well.

Got this announcement and I have posted a "Simply, Teaching Puppy to SAMBA" doc for startup users over the weekend (Most likely Sunday (US)). Great accomplishment, though, in covering the Puppy community; both the LiveCD (SAMBA PET which I've been using over the past 2 weeks) and the frugal community with your SFS. I am sure that many of us will be thankful users.

Now our Puppy(s) can move into the main-stream. This make a full-featured Puppy, low on memory, big on LAN services. In my preliminary comparison with a XP and a VISTA with a file transfer from a share, Pup511-SAMBA beats both systems serving the same file out to LAN users. None of my Microsoft PCs had to have anything done to see and use the resources made available from Puppy. My Puppy-Samba PC does everything same as any new PC with Microsoft.....everything now!

There are two great additions to the Puppy community using SAMBA.
  • A VERY LARGE community of supporter with 15 years of experience and contributions in SAMBA
  • A stable addition to the Puppy community.
These are important to me. ,,,, support and stability.

My hat is off to you for making this possible for all of this community.Thanks.
P.S. I had NO issues using SAMBA on Puppy 5.1.1 over the past 2 weeks. I have only been using and testing it as a simple non-secure NAS on the LAN, but there have been NO issues on installation, setup, use of its tools, and sharing information with my LAN. Thank you again for sharing this with all of us. Great work.

EDITED: Of equal significance and just as important, Shinobar had also contributed with an SFS for SAMBA 3.5.5. Thanks is in order to both of these individuals for these contributions.
